Stress is estimated to cost in the region of 3.7 billion pounds to business each year in the UK alone, accounts for more time taken off work than any other reason, and the costs to the individual can be huge:
Of course we cannot eliminate stress from our lives, and indeed a certain amount of stress is important in terms of providing opportunities for growth and for mastering new challenges. But we do need to be able to manage it so that it doesn't become debilitating and end up ruining our lives. The stress management that I advocate is very much present and future oriented; the past is only relevant in terms of seeing how past events may link with current issues. You would not be encouraged to dwell on past experiences, but rather encouraged and guided to work out practical solutions to your current problems. My approach is also holistic, in the sense that it incorporates a variety of strategies or techniques depending on your individual needs.
